Early in 2011, we were touched by the plight of Rubie. Suffering from an illness early in her life, Rubie faced up to a harsh decision, that would make even the strongest of us shiver.

At the age of 14, Rubie and her family had to make a decison whether to proceed with an operation to amputate her leg. If you were to stop for a moment to consider how daunting and monumental the consequences might be, then you will understand how easy it was for us to decide to contribute $5,000 towards her prosthetic limb. Of course Rubie is still growing physically, requiring constant adjustments, but also a certainty is that Rubie is already a beautiful young woman.

We probably forget how easy our own transition from child to adult was, perhaps our major challenge in life was simply pimples or braces on our teeth. While we contemplate that, spare a thought for Rubie.
