2011 Fundraising Dinner
Venue: Wests Leagues Club, Leumeah
Date: 5th November 2011
Another great night, the biggest ever! Almost 300 people raising over $30,000 net funds. All of this will be distributed to charities in our area, namely Beverley Park School's sensory room facility, as well as maintaining the swimming program for Mary Brooksbank School at Rosemeadow. Without these funds, both programs would have had to close without much hope of returning.
There was something that again came through loud and clear on the night - how great our area of Sydney is, and what we have in our community. Daniel Geale the world champ local boxer; Mick Meredith the self proclaimed bogan comedian from just across the road in Blacktown - very funny man, and Ric Bailey, with his songs and great voice to bring it all together for a non-stop night. And of course, the fabulous signing choir from Beverley Park School, who gave us 2 of their best songs, and put a big smile on our faces.

Few people knew much about Daniel Geale before he won a world boxing title this year. We hadn't seen much of him, before he gave up his personal time to come to our dinner and "wow" the crowd with his humility and great nature. Daniel was born in Tasmania, and lives locally in Harrington Park. 30 years old, he is the world IBF Middleweight Champion. In 2002 he won the Commonwealth Games gold medal in the welterweight division, and since he turned pro in 2004, has won 17 fights from 17 bouts with 12 KO's. In May 2011, he beat Sebastian Sylvester on the German's own soil to become world champ.
After Daniel's interview on Saturday night, everyone in the audience was impressed by his manner and determination. Off stage, he chatted with anyone who walked up to say hello. Daniel, we can't tell you how much we appreciated you being there, and you certainly raised the bar very high in the admiration stakes of all the men and women in the audience |
Mick Meredith, you funny, funny man! (if there's a funnier song than the ranga tune, then we haven't heard it). Don't think we didn't notice your great voice, and how well you play the guitar either!
We were highly entertained by the most versatile entertainer in the country. The self titled "bogan from Blacktown", was a great hit. Stayed for chat and a couple of beers, providing good company for our guests. Welcome back any time. Ric Bailey, did it for us last year and did it for us again! Another local bloke, another talent.
As well as making the night enjoyable with his smooth music and voice, Ric came to the rescue as roadie and set up the sound gear when we most needed it. He's an unassuming guy, who was happy to keep entertaining us all night long. Onya Ric! |
But again, the most important entertainment on the night was the Beverley Park School Signing Choir. For those who aren't aware, the kids perform songs, to which they sing/move/sign(language)/laugh along to, in the best way they know how. Led by one of the parents or staff from the school, the kids love it and so do we.
After all, this is what we are here for... the kids! |
